Trump Awards Medal to Tiger Woods, Calls Him ‘True Legend’

first_imgWASHINGTON — President Donald Trump awarded golfer Tiger Woods the nation’s highest civilian honor on Monday, describing the 43-year-old as a “true legend” who transformed golf and then fought through years of injury to return to the sport’s summit.Trump awarded Woods with the Presidential Medal of Freedom. He’s the fourth golfer to earn that distinction and certainly the youngest. While Woods dominated the sport for more than a decade, he won his first major in nearly 11 years at last month’s Masters Tournament, a comeback that captivated the sporting world.“Tiger was back on top,” Trump declared during the Rose Garden ceremony. If there were a Mount Rushmore for golfers, Woods would almost certainly be on it. He ranks second in PGA Tour wins and in major tournament victories. But the president’s decision to award the nation’s highest civilian honor to Woods also raised scrutiny about whether the president should be boosting the profile of a business associate of The Trump Organization.President Donald Trump, first lady Melania Trump and Tiger Woods pose for a picture with, from left, Woods’ girlfriend Erica Herman, his mother Kultida Woods, children Sam Alexis Woods and Charlie Axel Woods during a ceremony awarding Woods with the Presidential Medal of Freedom in the Rose Garden of the White House in Washington, Monday, May 6, 2019. (AP Photo/Manuel Balce Ceneta)Trump understood the importance of Woods comeback to golf and its fans, tweeting shortly after the Masters win that he was awarding Woods the medal because of his “incredible Success & Comeback in Sports (Golf) and, more importantly, LIFE.”Trump has been using Woods’ cachet to attract fans to his properties for decades. Trump got Woods to show up at his Taj Mahal casino in Atlantic City, New Jersey, a day after the golfer’s first Masters victory in 1997. The place was mobbed. Two thousand fans showed up as Woods walked down a 320-foot red carpet, some of them storming steel barricades to get a closer look.Trump has also struck business deals with Woods.Golfers at Trump’s club in Doral, Florida, can stay at the Tiger Woods Villa. At a ribbon cutting ceremony in 2014, Woods lavished praise on the future presidential candidate, calling changes he made to the club “phenomenal.”In Dubai, Woods designed an 18-hole course to be managed by The Trump Organization.Ethics officials have criticized Trump for not selling off his assets completely and holding the money in a blind trust. Instead, he set up a trust to hold his assets, handed day-to-day management responsibilities to two sons and hired an ethics lawyer to vet business deals. Trump can draw money from the trust and can benefit if his properties increase in value.“You have to ask whether it’s his true belief Tiger Woods deserves this award or whether he’s doing it to help his business,” said Jordan Libowitz, communications director at Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington, a left-leaning public policy group.Christopher Devine, an associate professor of political science at the University of Dayton, said Trump may have a business angle, but when he stacks up Woods’ accomplishments against other recipients, he believes Woods deserves it.“If President Obama or Hillary Clinton had given the award to Tiger, no one would have batted an eye,” said Devine, who has studied the history of the award, established in 1963.President George W. Bush presented the Medal of Freedom to Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicklaus. Obama presented it to Charlie Sifford, sometimes referred to as the “Jackie Robinson of golf.” Woods noted that he named his son after Sifford. “He was like the grandpa I never had,” Woods recalled.Devine also noted that previous presidents have presented the award to supporters and political donors. For example, Obama awarded the Medal of Freedom to Bruce Springsteen, who performed in concerts to support Obama’s election efforts. He also awarded it to his vice president, Joe Biden.Woods was joined at the ceremony by his mother, Kutilda; daughter, Sam Alexis, 11; son, Charlie Axel, 10; and girlfriend Erica Herman. Woods’ father, Earl, passed away more than a decade ago. Woods’ longtime caddie, Joe LaCava, also attended.Woods became emotional as he spoke of his parents, and he thanked those who have supported him over the years, saying, “You’ve seen the good and bad, the highs and lows, and I would not be in this position without all of your help.”The Presidential Medal of Freedom is given to individuals who have made “especially meritorious contributions to the security or national interests of the United States, to world peace, or to cultural or other significant public or private endeavors,” according to the White House. Presidents have complete discretion over whom they honor with the medal. Some athletes and sports champions have resisted visiting the Trump White House because of their differences with the president.Rick Reilly, who wrote a book about Trump’s golfing entitled “Commander in Cheat,” said Woods has brought golf to people of color all over the world, while Trump has promoted it as a sport for the rich. He said Woods has not been one to take stands on political issues, but should have declined the award in this case.“I can see how it would be hard to resist, but I still think it’s hypocritical to do it,” Reilly said.By: Kevin Freking, Associated PressTweetPinShare0 Shareslast_img read more

Assemblywoman Lorena Gonzalez introduces bill on paid sick leave

first_img KUSI Newsroom KUSI Newsroom, Posted: March 15, 2019 Assemblywoman Lorena Gonzalez introduces bill on paid sick leave March 15, 2019 SAN DIEGO (KUSI) – Assemblywoman Lorena Gonzalez, D-San Diego, announced today that she has introduced a bill to guarantee at least five paid sick days each year for the state’s private sector workers. The bill will expand on Gonzalez’s 2014 law that required private sector companies to provide at least three days of paid sick leave per year to employees. According to Gonzalez, nearly 6.9 million state residents gained access to sick leave thanks to the law. Multiple cities around the state, including San Diego, Los Angeles and Santa Monica, have since passed laws to further expand paid sick leave benefits.“We knew when we passed the paid sick leave law that three days wouldn’t be enough but was a great start,” Gonzalez said. “California was a national leader in establishing earned sick leave for every employee in the state. Now, we need to catch up to other cities and states that have recognized the need for, and have passed, more expansive laws for workers.”The new bill would mandate that employers offer at least five days of sick leave to employees by their 200th day on the job. The bill would accommodate recovery times for the flu, according to Gonzalez’s office, which average about five days.A 2010 study by the Institute for Women’s Policy Research found that roughly eight million workers around the country went to work while fighting the flu during the 2009 flu season. As a result, an additional seven million people contracted the flu virus.Gonzalez proposed a functionally similar bill during the 2017-2018 legislative session, which subsequently died in committee. Her office did not disclose when they expect the new bill, AB 555, to have its first committee hearing. Categories: Local San Diego News FacebookTwitterlast_img read more

Hulu tops 25 million subscribers but still trails Netflix by miles

first_img Share your voice Post a comment 0 Tags TV and Movies Digital Media Hulu has been adding subscribers but remains much smaller than rival Netflix.   Sarah Tew/CNET Hulu surpassed 25 million total subscribers across all products in 2018, the company said Tuesday, an increase of 8 million from a year earlier. Like all other subscription streaming video services, Hulu is still far behind global leader Netflix, which had 137 million members worldwide at the end of September. But Hulu noted its milestone means it has more video customers than even the biggest cable and satellite TV companies in the US, which includes Comcast. The cable giant, which incidentally is one of Hulu’s parents, had 21 million residential TV customers at the end of September. (Awkward… )Although smaller than Netflix, Hulu was one of the vanguards of streaming television. As Netflix has secured its dominance, Hulu has grappled with a crowd of rivals to be one of the other services most consumers sign up for. That competition is set to only grow. Traditional Hollywood giants like Disney, Time Warner and others plan to launch their own versions of Netflix this year.In its end-of-year recap, Hulu said it’s the only service of its kind that has full seasons of 80 percent of the shows nominated for Emmys last year. And people are binge-watching there, too. For Hulu’s top 100 shows, more than half of all viewing sessions were for three or more episodes of the same series.Among other stats, Hulu said average time spent per subscriber each month increased 20 percent last year, and it said viewers who subscribe to both its on-demand service and its live-TV offering spend half of their time watching that on-demand or recorded programming. Hulu said it leaned in to that behavior by investing “significantly” in exclusive programming and improving its streaming technology. It reduced buffering by 90 percent, it said. Its advertising revenue hit a new high of $1.5 billion in 2018, up more than 45 percent. The median age of a Hulu viewer is 32, and the average annual household income was $93,000.Correction, 12:11 p.m. PT: This story initially misstated the year that Hulu’s advertising revenue hit a new high.
