Southland Men’s Basketball Hits Week Six of League Play

The Privateers host Northwestern State (3-17, 0-9 SLC) tonight at 7 p.m. CT and welcome the Colonels (13-9, 7-2 SLC) on Saturday at 4:15 p.m. A wild week four, including Southeastern Louisiana dropping its midweek contest to SHSU 75-65 before topping then-first place Nicholls 67-63 on Saturday, now has four teams leading the Southland – all with just two conference losses. The Bears used a 43-point performance from Southland leading scorer Jordan Howard and a 28-point game from junior guard Thatch Unrah to lift UCA past SFA 100-92. The Lumberjacks defeated the rival Bearkats on Saturday 82-66 at home and stay in Nacogdoches to host Houston Baptist (5-17, 1-8 SLC) tonight at 7 p.m. They will then compete at Lamar (13-9, 5-4 SLC) on Saturday at 4:30 p.m. • Consecutive Conference Champs?: The top of the standings saw an early shakeup with Stephen F. Austin and Southeastern Louisiana falling on the road last Wednesday. New Orleans, the 2016-17 regular season and tournament champions, picked up two road wins and now lead the Southland standings with an 8-2 league record. Nicholls, Southeastern Louisiana and Stephen F. Austin each have just two conference losses. • Putting Up Points: Houston Baptist dropped 102 points at home this past Wednesday to earn the Huskies first Southland win of the season. Freshman David Caraher helped lead the team to the victory over UIW, shooting 9-of-16 from the field and 3-of-4 from three-point range. The Huskies’ mark is the most points a Southland team has scored in league action this year.• ‘Ders Defending Home: After starting the conference season 1-5, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi strung together back-to-back home wins to improve to 3-5 and start seperating from the bottom of the standings. The Islanders began the week with an 80-66 win over Abilene Christian before defeating Houston Baptist in overtime 79-69 on Saturday. Senior guard Joseph Kilgore earned a triple double behind 24 points, 12 rebounds and 11 assists against HBU.• Hoops City, USA: Stephen F. Austin remained undefeated at home this season, defeating rival Sam Houston State 82-66 on Saturday. The Lumberjacks are 12-0 at home this season. The Colonels do not have any midweek action and await their Saturday battle for first against the Privateers. The Lions stay at home this week to take on Texas A&M-Corpus Christi – who rides a two-game winning streak – on Wednesday at 7 p.m. and contest Central Arkansas (12-11, 6-4 SLC) 5 p.m. on Saturday.
