Crusader preview: Wellington to battle Goddard Eisenhower; Andrew Pelkey out for the season

first_imgby Tracy McCue, Sumner Newscow — It has been awhile since Wellington has received really bad news on the medical front. But it got some this Wednesday.Wellington’s strong side linebacker and all-state wrestler Andrew Pelkey is out with an ACL tear. He is most certainly out for the season in football and his senior season of wrestling is in jeopardy.“This definitely hurts us,” said Tyler Ryan, Wellington head football coach. “He was a leader on defense. Just a hard nosed kid, who we could count on week in and week out.”Andrew PelkeyIt was not the kind of news Wellington wanted to hear going into Friday’s contest against the fast athletic Goddard Eisenhower Tigers. To make up for the loss, Ryan is bringing in Zach Bodkins to fill the position and moving Connor Phelps to the outside.Goddard Eisenhower is the newest school in the Wichita area – which was born just three years ago. It is a Class 5A school and plays in the Ark Valley Chisholm Trail League Div. II. The Tigers are Carolina blue and black. And the team, just in its third year, is looking ever bit like its predecessors at Maize South and Andover Central – getting good really soon.“They are fast and athletic,” Ryan said. “They have a 6-0, 230 pound fullback named Josh Fatkin. He’s pretty good.”Eisenhower opened with a 21-7 loss to Andover – a game many within the Tiger program thought they could have won. That was a team predicted to win the AV-CTL Div. II.“I think what concerns me is they have great speed on the edges,” Ryan said. “They have a ton of athleticism.” Follow us on Twitter. How to get there: Goddard Eisenhower plays on the same field as Goddard High School, on the east side of the community. There are multiple ways to get there but Google maps said the best route is to take the road to Conway Springs north to U.S. 54 and come in from the west. Wellington’s roster:  9-26 Clearwater Home Series history: None. This is the first time the two teams have met. Game’s significance: It is still a non-league, non-district game so nothing that is being done right now will effect the team’s league or post season aspirations. Still, a win here, would put Wellington at 2-0 and be a nice feather in its cap against a AV-CTL Div. 2 opponent. Injury situation: Pelkey is out. Junior Jared Shields is out. Ryan said there are other minor injuries. 4210Dylan FergusonRB5’11163 859Jack WaltonTE6’2190 559Jaden AdamsOL5’7160 339Logan JonesRB6’1188 1812Austin PfalzgrafWR6’1165 7511Jace LoweOL5’11240 2112Andrew PelkeyRB6’0170 9-19 @ Circle Away Close Forgot password? It is probably the fastest route and is major highway the whole way. Report Reply 0 replies · active 308 weeks ago Post a new comment Enter text right here!
